Backpacks, Biomechanics, and The Teddy Bears' Picnic

Is That Backpack Heavier Than Your Kid?

September is here. The buses are running in St. James, and the backpacks are loaded.

We often see children leaning forward to counter the weight of a heavy bag. This forces their head up and creates significant tension in the neck and shoulders. Over time, this repetitive stress can shift their posture and affect their developing spine.

The 10% Rule

A general guideline is that a backpack should not weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of your child's body weight.

  • Pack Heavy Items Close: Keep textbooks closest to the back.

  • Use Both Straps: Slinging it over one shoulder causes the spine to curve laterally to compensate.

We'll See You at the Picnic!

Don't miss the Teddy Bears' Picnic at Assiniboine Park this month (Sept 7). It is a great reminder that health care can be gentle and friendly. Our pediatric chiropractic checks are gentle, fun, and non-invasive — the kind of experience kids actually look forward to. We check for spinal function to ensure your child is growing straight and strong.
